Sophie Branson

Sophie was born in 2006 in Tokyo into the family of a British mathematician and a violinist from Russia. She has been studying in the studio of Liana Tretiakova at the Zakhar Bron School of Music in Zurich since 2010 and at the Arts and Sport Gymnasium Zurich since 2019.

Sophie is the winner of the Swiss Youth Music Competition 2019 in the chamber music category and of the international competitions “Premio di Padova” 2017 (Italy) and “Rising Stars” 2020 in Riga (Latvia) as a soloist. She attended master classes of Prof. Zakhar Bron, Maxim Vengerov, Daniel Hope and Alexandra Soumm at the Menton Music Festival, the Zakhar Bron Academy in Interlaken and the Salzburg Summer Academy.

In May 2015 Sophie became a prize winner of the international competition “Crescendo” in Geneva, where in the final round she made her debut as a soloist with the chamber orchestra “Soloists of Neuchâtel” under the baton of Sergei Ostrovsky, and performed the Bach Concerto in A-minor. In the same year she appeared as a soloist with the Pskov Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Arif Dadashev (Moscow) with concertos of Bach and Vivaldi. Since then Sophie has appeared regularly as a soloist with orchestras: in Novosibirsk, Omsk (Russia), Minsk (Belarus), Geneva and Grenchen (Switzerland) and has performed concerts of Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart and Wieniawski and virtuosic pieces by Vitali, Sarasate and Stravinsky.

In 2018, Sophie participated together with Vadim Repin, Alexander Buzlov and Ilva Eigus in the world premiere of Daniel Schnyder’s Concerto Grosso “iGeneration” at the Trans-Siberian Art Festival. With the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, she also performed Stravinsky’s Italian Suite. Both performances received excellent reviews in “The Strad”.

At the Menton Music Festival 2018, Sophie performed at the Cocteau Museum as part of the “Young Artists” series, and at the festival “Moscow Meets Friends” at the invitation of the Spivakov Foundation.

In 2019, in a duet with Moe Zürcher, Sophie won 1st prize at the Swiss Youth Music Competition. The duo was invited to perform at the Zaubersee Music Festival in Lucerne.

The highlight of winter 2020 was the 1st prize at the “Rising Stars” competition in Latvia, where Sophie was invited to perform in the Philharmonic Hall of Riga.

Sophie’s second instrument is the piano, which she also loves to play. She has won prizes at both the Zurich Music Competition and the Swiss Youth Music Competition in the piano ensemble category.
