On January 25th 2025, ZBSM violinist Sophie Branson (18) performed Sibelius’s Violin Concerto with the Colchester Symphony Orchestra, conducted by its artistic director Maestro Chris Phelps, at St. Botolph’s Church in Colchester, UK.
Sibelius’s Violin Concerto is one of the most powerful and poetic works in the violin repertoire. It combines Nordic restraint, dramatic intensity, and symphonic scope, with soloistic virtuosity always serving the music rather than mere effect. The concerto demands not only technical perfection but also mature, deeply symphonic musical thinking.
Sophie performed this concerto with a rare balance of inner concentration and freedom for her age. Her playing was marked by clear dramatic structure, a noble and rich tone, and a precise sense of form. In the slow movement she created a dark, tense atmosphere, while in the finale she confidently united virtuoso energy with orchestral breadth, leaving the impression of a thoughtful and mature interpretation.
The audience received the performance with great warmth and enthusiasm. The church hall, accommodating approximately 350 listeners, was completely full, creating an atmosphere of intense focus and shared attention. The young soloist was met with sustained applause, reflecting the impact of her compelling and confident interpretation.
Two years ago, in November 2022, Sophie performed Bruch’s Violin Concerto in Colchester with the St. Botolph’s Music Society Orchestra. The concert was attended by the manager of the Colchester Symphony Orchestra, who was deeply impressed by the artistic level of the young soloist, then just 16 years old. As a result, he personally invited her to perform Sibelius’s Violin Concerto in early 2025.
The city of Colchester, renowned as the oldest city in the United Kingdom and founded nearly 2’000 years ago, holds deep personal significance for Sophie. It is the hometown of her father, as well as of her paternal grandparents. For this reason, performing in Colchester was especially meaningful for her. The concert was made even more special by the presence of both her grandparents, who helped the orchestra as volunteers for decades.
For Sophie, it is always a great joy to perform when her grandparents are present in the audience. On this occasion, the concert was made even more special by the arrival of her aunt and cousin, who travelled from Manchester to hear her perform.
Sophie has studied at the Zakhar Bron School of Music in the class of Liana Tretiakova, the school’s founder and leading violin teacher, since 2010—when she was just three years old. Over the past fifteen years, she has made remarkable progress and is now enrolled in the Professional Programme. She takes three one-hour lessons per week with Liana and practises five to six hours a day.
Despite her young age, Sophie already has dozens of performances worldwide to her name, including appearances with chamber and symphony orchestras. Her performance of Sibelius Violin Concerto in Colchester marked her seventh performance of this masterpiece with orchestra, following six earlier performances with orchestras in Kazakhstan, Moldova, and Bulgaria.
Sophie is a prize-winner at numerous Swiss regional and international violin competitions and made her debut at the age of sixteen on the main stage of the renowned Tonhalle Zurich, performing to a sold-out audience. Sophie aspires to a professional solo violin career, and her teacher, Liana Tretiakova, is doing everything possible to help turn this dream into reality.
