Ilva Eigus, violin, at the Tonhalle debut in February 2023

From Dream to Stage: Ilva Eigus (15) Debuts in a Sold-Out Concert at Tonhalle Zürich with the Prague Royal Philharmonic

On February 11, 2023, Ilva Eigus, a talented 15-year-old violin student from the class of Liana Tretiakova at the Zakhar Bron School of Music, made her spectacular debut at one of Europe’s most prestigious concert venues, the Tonhalle Zürich. She performed Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s celebrated Violin Concerto in E minor, accompanied by the Prague Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Heiko Mathias Förster.

Performing on the renowned stage of Tonhalle Zürich had long been a cherished dream for Ilva, who is already recognized as one of Switzerland’s most accomplished young violinists. The Tonhalle ranks among the world’s elite concert halls—comparable to the Royal Albert Hall in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Musikverein in Vienna—making it the leading venue for classical music in Switzerland. It is therefore no surprise that performing there is a dream for every young Swiss musician, although few, even among professional musicians, ever achieve this honor.

In mid-2022, the Zakhar Bron School of Music was invited to prepare one of its young violinists for a performance on the prestigious stage of the Tonhalle Zürich. The school chose Ilva, an experienced and multi-award-winning young artist. This opportunity presented a significant challenge for both Ilva and the school, requiring extraordinary preparation, but it also represented a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The Performance and Final Rehearsal

This was undoubtedly one of Ilva’s finest performances, marking her remarkable debut at the illustrious Tonhalle Zürich. Her interpretation was technically superb yet effortless and graceful, perfectly embodying Mendelssohn’s signature charm and lyrical elegance. Ilva brought extraordinary vitality to each note, capturing the hearts and imaginations of the audience from the very first phrase.

The sold-out hall warmly and enthusiastically responded to Ilva’s brilliant artistry. As the final notes lingered in the air, applause erupted into a passionate standing ovation—a profoundly moving moment that will undoubtedly be remembered by Ilva and all who attended.

Remarkably, Ilva had only a brief ten-minute acoustic rehearsal at the Tonhalle, significantly shorter than the customary minimum of thirty minutes usually required to adapt to the hall’s renowned acoustics. Her ability to quickly adjust and deliver an exceptional performance underscores her remarkable maturity and professionalism, which far exceed her young age.

The dedication and detailed preparation leading to the concert were evident. Several days earlier, Ilva and her devoted teacher, Liana Tretiakova, traveled to Prague for intensive practice and a final rehearsal with the Prague Royal Philharmonic. Their meticulous preparation ensured a flawless and deeply expressive performance on one of Switzerland’s most esteemed stages.

Celebrating 12 Years with Her Violin Teacher

Ilva Eigus began studying violin at the Zakhar Bron School of Music in 2011 at the tender age of three and a half, under the guidance of Liana Tretiakova, the school’s founder and lead violin teacher. Over the past twelve years, Ilva has earned numerous national and international awards and performed at distinguished venues across Europe.

Her debut at the Tonhalle Zürich symbolizes well-deserved recognition for her outstanding talent, dedication, and persistent hard work. In many ways, this performance celebrated twelve remarkable years of collaboration with her esteemed teacher.

The Youngest ZBSM Violinist to Take the Tonhalle Stage

Just two months prior, in December 2022, another talented ZBSM violinist, sixteen-year-old Sophie Branson, made history as the first ZBSM soloist to perform on the Tonhalle stage. With her debut at age fifteen, however, Ilva Eigus became the youngest ZBSM violinist to achieve this milestone.

Tonhalle Zürich: One of the World’s Leading Concert Venues

Inaugurated in 1895 with Johannes Brahms conducting, the Tonhalle Zürich is renowned globally for its exceptional acoustics. It serves as the home of Switzerland’s oldest symphony orchestra, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich, established in 1868.

Over the decades, the Tonhalle stage has welcomed numerous legendary conductors, including Karl Böhm, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Otto Klemperer, Carl Schuricht, Bruno Walter, Sir George Solti, Andris Nelsons, Bernard Haitink, and Kurt Masur.

A comprehensive renovation between 2017 and 2021 restored the hall to its original splendor, reinforcing its status as a premier destination for classical music.
