Cellist Rafael Rosenfeld, a native of Lucerne, was born in 1973 to a family of musicians. He studied with Walter Grimmer in Zurich and David Geringas in Lübeck and was a prizewinner at the ARD Music Competition in 1996 in Munich; in December 2000 he took first prize at the Concours de Genève.
At the age of 22 Rosenfeld was appointed principal cellist of the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, a position which he still holds. In addition he has performed as a soloist and chamber musician, partnering for example with András Schiff, Heinz Holliger, Tabea Zimmermann, Julia Fischer, and Joshua Bell.
He is also a member of the Merel Quartet and has performed with this ensemble at the Salzburg Festival, the Weimar Art Festival, the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, the Omaggio a Palladio in Vicenza, and the Ittingen Whitsun Concerts. Since autumn 2005 Rosenfeld has taught as Professor of Cello at the Basel College of Music.
